"YouTube - NEW Surfboard Technology with Foilz Hydrofoil Surfing Fin Design.mp4." YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. Web. 18 Jan. 2011. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xuSg4ht4dw. MYP1, session 4 Teacher:Veronica Mendoza Date:January 20th. 2011 Objective:To recognize reliable sources of information Activities: 1. What did we learn in the last session (Technology rubric) 2. Warm up activity: a. Technology news (video) 3. How do we know information is true?
Introduction. How do we know information is true? Doing research is a very important part of the Investigation stage when using the Design cycle but, how do you know the information you find is actually true?Where do you go to find information?
There are several ways to do research. 1. Look in a book or reference publication (Encyclopedia, dictionary, etc) 2. Interview someone 3. Experience it and try it yourself 4. Go online to the internet
Most of you are used to finding information by doing #4, searching the Internet. The Internet is something you use frequently and also happens to be a place where there is a lot of information to access within seconds. There are millions of websites each containing a lot of information.
But do you believe everything you read?
TIPS TO FIND RELIABLE SOURCES OF INFORMATION Investigate the source to make sure it is valid and reliable: Take few minutes to ask, "What source or what kind of source would be the most credible for providing information in this particular case?" Which sources are likely to be fair, objective, lacking hidden motives, showing quality control? It is important to keep these considerations in mind, so that you will not simply take the opinion of the first source or two you can locate. By thinking about these issues while searching, you will be able to identify suspicious or questionable sources more readily. With so many sources to choose from in a typical search, there is no reason to settle for unreliable material. Try to select sources that offer as much of the following information as possible: o Author's Name o Author's Title or Position o Author's Organizational Affiliation o Date of Page Creation or Version o Author's Contact Information
Look for credentials of the author o Verify educational credits o Discover if the writer is either published in a scholarly journal o Verify that the writer is employed by a research institution or university If the information is linked to an organization, try to determine the reliability of the sponsoring organization. o .edu and .gov probably reliable sources of information but be aware of political bias o .org can be very good sources or very poor sources, so you'll have to take care to research their possible agendas or political biases, if they exist. Look for reputable journals or magazines that contain a bibliography for every article.
